NEW YORK, NYLast week brought an Australian school on tour to the NYC area. Here’s a match report, submitted by their hosts, Xavier High School:

Country: Australia
State/Province: Victoria
City: Melbourne
Name: Trinity Grammar School
Xavier defeated Trinity School from Melbourne, Australia 43-14.   As per the match report that was relayed to us courtesy of Tom O’Hara, Xavier class of  ’69, as published on the website of the Rugby Referees Society of New York (https://www.rugbyrefsny.com):
Referee [Brad Kleiner]
Xavier showing more skill in the ball handling, kicking, tackling. Trinity relied on multiple pick and go before spinning the ball to the backs but backs fairly static and easy tackling targets for Xavier. Xavier able to open several long running tries. Fun game.

Following their Friday night game. Trinity then took on a combined side of the New York Rugby Club High School Boys and the Play Rugby Academy High School Boys team.

Trinity bounced back well as they won against a very game NYRC-PRA side. The Combined side face a tough challenge having only had on 2 hour practice the day before to put their systems in place. The defense appeared to have gelled quickly. Trinity’s system of pick and go’s near the ruck then swinging it out wide was meet with great resistance in the in tight areas.

The close quarters combat made it tough for Trinity to his their stride but they eventually found the opportunites they sought as they spread the ball and scored. As the game wore on the NYRC-PLA defense left themselves exposed more out wide as they attempted to pinch in the defense. Trinity were able to find a few more try scoring opportunites that way.

The unfamiliarity with which the players had with each was displayed as the NYRC-PLA attack stalled from time to time. Rhythm’s were not in sink but they battered away at the Trinity defense and were rewarded with a try by Nick Franklyn. Trinity voted Franklyn the man of the match for the NYRC-PLA Side. Strong performances were also put in by captain Sean Gannon in the forwards and John Jolivett and Kevin Braithwaite in the backs.

The spirit of the game was in good standing as the kids chatted and mingled afterwards while enjoying Chipotle. A new treat for the Aussies.
