Alabama Back Brent Calloway Earns Rugby Trial

RQU HQ – Former high school Army All-American Brent Calloway never had the football career he once desired.BC3

After redshirting as a freshman at the University of Alabama in 2011, Calloway spent his second season with the team bouncing back and forth between running back, half-back and linebacker, playing in 12 games.

As the 2013 season began to approach, it seemed that the former Crimson Tide athlete had it all figured out. He was set to become a starter going into spring ball at half-back, but that was all before Feb. 11, 2013.

On that fateful winter night Calloway and three other Alabama football players were arrested in a robbery, with the former half-back getting charged for a count of fraudulent use of a credit card. Calloway was then released from Alabama and never returned.

“You get caught up in the life. Playing football, going to class and being a college athlete,” Calloway said, according to Alabama Intel. “I just got caught up in the moment and made some bad decisions I regret.

BC2I am deeply sorry for everything I did, especially when I set back and think about the choices I made. When I was told (Alabama) were going to have to let me go, it took the breath out of me.

Fast forward to Nov. 25, and the former college half-back is back on the playing field. This time it’s not football. It’s rugby. Calloway was offered a one-week trail with the Catalans Dragons, a French rugby league team. The former high school star will train with the team’s reserves during the trial.

“It’s interesting to work with him and to give him the opportunity to show his qualities,Catalans CEO Christophe Jouffret said, according to News Limited. “We’ll take a decision at the end of the week. It’s interesting to gauge the capacity to adapt to rugby league for an athlete coming from another sport.”

Considering Calloway had been through a great deal of adversity in his athletic career, the pressure of playing with the Dragons shouldn’t be too much for the dual-sport athlete. It all depends on whether or not the team feels Calloway has the potential and talent worth their time.
