RWU HQ – Former NRL star Jarryd Hayne is about to embark on one of the toughest challenges of his life – the San Francisco 49ers’ training camp.Hayne 2

While the camp doesn’t start until August 1, rookies will report Monday – including Hayne.

After an impressive set of organized team activities and minicamp, it’s time to put the pads on.

The former Paramatta Eel will have the chance to prove that he belongs in the National Football League.

Hayne is in a crowded position group at running backs, with the likes of Reggie Bush, Carlos Hyde, Kendall Hunter and Mike Davis all “near-locks” to make the 53-man roster according to Niners Nation, Hayne will have an uphill battle just to make the squad.

Hayne1With a loaded position group, chances are good that Hayne will need to display his abilities on special teams to increase his chances on making the team. While he’s show his skills in the return game, primary return man Bruce Ellington should be healthy by the start of training camp.

That means the dual-sport athlete might need to prove his worth on the punt and kick-off coverage units. And with his rugby background he should be in good shape in both of those areas.

When you think of past dual-athletes that have tried to make the switch from the pitch to the gridiron in the past,Hayne 3 Hayne has the best shot to make a 53-man roster and be an impact player.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see how things pan out in the next month or so.
