NEW YORK, NY – As the mercury rises here in New York City, Rugby United NY’s brain-trust stays hot literally and figuratively, adding Apenisa Cakaubalavu. The 6’2″ 200lb Flying Fijian 7s star is a stellar signing.

Don’t believe me? Watch this:

To steal a Major League Baseball analogy, Cakaubalavu is a five-tool player. He can run, pass, break tackles, create space and tackle with dominance. His size, speed and versatility make him hard to mark and offers the #RUNY coaching staff with some great options. Indeed, here’s what Team USA’s Mike Friday, who had to contend with had to say about Cakaubalavu:

“He was part of their physical forward pack that won the World Rugby Sevens Series in 2019. Such a big rangy runner with long levers, agility and the offloading ability of a basketball player, but the natural game-play of a Fijian rugby player… He always ran intelligent support lines.”

The Eagles 7s Head Coach continued, “He will be a handful in the MLR and could definitely be a loose forward or second row option that will greatly open pitch link play to the squad. He could also do a job on the wing if required, with his footballing ability and aerial threat.”
And here is what RUNY Head Coach Greg McWilliams had to offer:
“We are delighted to welcome Apenisa to New York. A dynamic, skillful player who will add great value to our backline. We want to excite the supporters of Rugby United New York and this addition does just that.”
Those thoughts are what make Fijian players so special. Regardless of size, they all have tremendous skill sets. Wherever he ends up playing, one thing is for certain… Rugby United NY has one heckuva rugby player in Cakaubalavu to excite fans and create headaches for opposing teams.
