NEW YORK, NY – You can’t help but like USA Rugby Mens’ Eagles Head Coach Gary Gold. Despite a tough travel schedule, meetings galore and training sessions in unfamiliar environs, he found the time to speak with us from Romania. Our Matt McCarthy and Gold’s fellow South African Barry Herbert, brought a smile to the coach’s face, admitting to haven eaten plenty of crow for picking Samoa to beat Team USA. We all know that didn’t happen. Light moments aside, Coach Gold candidly discusses things with McCarthy, including:
-The emergence of star players like Joe Taufete’e
-The San Sebastian police potentially wanting to question Cam Dolan
-The cutting of the teeth for young players, especially Ruben de Haas and Hanco Germishuys.
-Looking past Romania, with Ireland Looming
–Growing Pains and Luck
–Blaine Scully as captain.
–Historic win streak
-The mix of veterans and youth.
–Injuries and Depth
And don’t miss our segment re the storied New York Rugby Club’s #NY7s Tournament. The NYRC turns 90 years old in February and their Thanksgiving Weekend tourney turns 60 next week. And it just so happens that our man Matt McCarthy happens to be a NYRC member, so there’s a bit of synergy in this one with New York 7s Coordinator/Player Dan Cavanagh. Even Old Blue legend and 7s Czar Steve Lewis feels the love in this installment of our Fantasy Sports Network show. The three talk about the tourney, the 7s calendar and witness the debut of our Future Stars Today segment. This one features the Mark Loane Award winner as High School Player of the Year, Ethan McVeigh. Finally, we top of this segment with an elite 7s coach that could easily double as a Danielle Steele novel cover guy.
