Every week, England 7s star Mathew Drew Turner takes on the role of brazen, if not cheeky, reporter for RWU. Left, he negotiates shark-infested waters.
CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA – This is my last piece from Cape Town for a couple weeks now, as with my job I’m back on the road. It kinder makes me feel like a Rock Star, I guess… being on the road, but minus all the drugs, girls and music parts. So, actually it’s nothing like being a rock star – but it was worth a try.
With the last two tourneys fast approaching, my excitement levels are rapidly increasing and I can’t wait to be out on the field again, not so much for Glasgow; never really liked Scotland – I’m English! 🙂 …Can’t wait to play at Twickenham again, though. Switching the last two tourneys around was very smart by the IRB because at least you finish off with a bang! Playing in front of a decent crowd and not having that feeling that you just want to get out of the place when your done playing… haha.
Quite a few teams have injuries coming into the last legs and team selection is going to be very interesting. But teams like New Zealand, Fiji and South Africa have such depth and such a wide pool of talent, that I’m sure they’ll find the next big stars in the game.
Regardless, these tournaments are going to be very exciting, with the top 4 teams all within reach of each other. Personally, I think NZ will be hard to catch for us [England] but 2nd place is well within our grabs and we ll be coming out firing to catch Fiji.
Next week, I’ll have all the stories from within team camp, as I’m only joining up next week.
