RWU HQ – Former Notre Dame rugger Tyler Plantz is getting the shot of a lifetime when he travels to Chula Tyler PlantzVista, Calif. this weekend.

The 5-year Fighting Irish rugby member will take part in USA Rugby’s first National Team Olympic Recruitment Camp. With Eagles Sevens coaches on hand Plantz, among ruggers like former Green Bay Packers running back Ahman Green, are trying out for the chance to represent the United States at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

While Plantz attended Notre Dame and played rugby, the 5-foot-8 rugger was also a member of the Notre Dame football team. The dual-sport athlete was a member from 2012-2014, mainly as a special teamer. Plantz even appeared in the 2012 BCS National Championship game against Alabama and was named the team’s Scout Player of the Year in 2014 – in his first season as a scholarship athlete.

TP3According to university’s athletics website, not only will athletes test their physical skills during the camp, but they also completed a “preliminary online rugby law exam” before they arrived at the United States Olympic Training Center. At the end of the camp athletes will learn their USA Rugby High Performance Pathway, whether it’s at the “Olympic Training Center, a National Development Academy, an AIG All-American team, or a club in the United States or abroad.”Tyler Plantz

Come back next week to see where the likes of Plantz and Green, among others, end up.
