Why The San Francisco 49ers Are a Fit For Jarryd Hayne

San Francisco, Calif. – For those who had been following Jarry Hayne’s journey from the National Rugby League to the National Football League, Monday night’s news was a bit of a Hayne1curve ball.

After all of the arrows pointed towards Hayne getting a deal done with the Detroit Lions, it was the San Francisco 49ers who sealed the deal in the end. The 49ers signed Hayne to futures contract with $100,000 guaranteed.

“It’s a small step in my dream becoming a reality,” Hayne said, according to The Daily Telegraph. “It’s been tough, when you pioneer something, you don’t really know what to do.

JH2“For me, just making this decision and stepping out, I feel like I have already won. I have already accomplished movement in myself. Whatever happens from here is a bonus.”

But what does this signing exactly mean for the 49ers? How does Hayne fit on this roster?

Many see Hayne as a running back in this league, which is a good for San Francisco. With the 49ers losing two of their top three running backs to free agency next week, the former Parramatta Eel has an opportunity ripe for the taking. The 49ers are known for their ground and pound running style, which would be right in Hayne’s wheelhouse. Hayne could bring a nice combination of size a speed to compliment Carlos Hyde.JH3

Aside from the running back position, Hayne could fit in well as a return specialist in the NFL. While Bruce Ellington, the current kick and punt returner, is still under contract he should have a chance to win the starting spot. The 49ers are losing two of their to four wide receivers, which could give Ellington the chance for more playing time on the outside. If Ellington plays more at wide receiver, the coaches may be more hesitate to line the up the wide receiver on kickoffs and punts. When and if that happens Hayne will have his opportunity.
