NEW YORK, NYThe Butcher is back but there’s no need to worry, unless you play on a Major League Rugby team other than Rugby United NY. The day after announcing key cog Nate Brakeley would be back, New York announced a new deal with Captain Dylan Fawsitt.

Dylan_Fawsitt, Rugby_Wrap_UpDylan Fawsitt is the straw that stirs the drink, so to speak; a menacing hooker that cleaved a career out of try-producing rolling mauls and the dark environs of unruly rucks. But “Butch” is not your daddy’s hooker – he epitomizes the new breed of mobile, heat-seeking missile prototypes that can carry the ball and stretch the defense. He’s strong enough to play up front but versatile enough to play at the #8 position when need arises. And Fawsitt plays with a chip on his shoulder, an intangible that a coaching staff likes and needs on a roster. Rugby ain’t tennis, after all. Moreover, he’ll let his teammates know if they aren’t working hard enough or taking a training session too lightly. If it’s not a verbal alert, it can come with a glare that Clint Eastwood would appreciate.

As corny as it sounds, though, Fawsitt epitomizes how hard work and steeled focus can make the American Dream a reality. He came over to the USA from Ireland with not much more than an unrelenting drive, grit and resolve to succeed. Life University is where it started. I met him when Life was playing Old Blue here in NY. He told me he was going to be the Team USA hooker. It was hard to disagree with him and I remember thinging, ‘This is a guy I’d like to have on my team.’ It wasn’t long after that Dylan made the move to NYC and Old Blue.

More hard work led to contracts in both the now-defunct PRO Rugby (Ohio Aviators) and the MLR, (Glendale Raptors and #RUNY). His play – and the necessary residency status – finally resulted in his chance to play for Team USA. Fawsitt did not let that chance go by and under the tutelage of former hooker, USA Head Coach Gary Gold, The Butcher has played before a sold-out crowd in Dublin vs Ireland (I was there for that) and in the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

RUNY Head Coach Greg McWilliams, who serves as an Eagles Assistant Coach and has known Dylan since his Blackrock College days, had this to say:

“What more can I say? Butcher is so critical to our organization is so many ways. A skillful, hardworking, tough player who, like Nate [Brakeley] was a key member of the USA World Cup squad of 2019. That experience is vital as we continue to make strides to represent the rugby community of New York in the ever improving MLR.”

And so The Butcher’s journey continues in his adopted home of New York City. Get your messy aprons ready.
