College Football Comes To RWU: Johnny Manziel

Something dawned on me last night when I sat down to write my newest column. I haven’t once talked about college football on RugbyWrapUp! Which took me by surprise. This took me by surprise because college football plays such a big role in my life. I myself play college ball. As you may or may not know, I’m an offensive tackle at Western New England University in Springfield, Massachusetts.

What does Johnny Football have in-store for this season?

So with the college football season officially starting yesterday, I figured it was time to talk about something college football and I’m going to start with Johnny Football.

For those of you looking for me to praise Texas A&M quarterback and current Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel here, this might not be the column for you to be reading.

I may be alone on this, but Johnny Manziel bothers me. He’s an arrogant rich kid that has had everything off of the football field given to him and has almost wasted everything he’s earned on the football field because of that arrogance.

I’m sorry, but nobody signs thousands of autographs on multiple occasions for free! FOR FREE!!! And how does the NCAA interview him for six hours and find basically nothing? You can only say no so many times. But, I’m sure in the years to come the truth will come out that Manziel signed all those autographs and received some sort of payment, which means this season means nothing for him or A&M.

So Manziel gets suspended by the NCAA for the first half of yesterday’s game against Rice. When he comes in he lights up the field (I’ll admit it he played tremendously) going 6-8 for 94 yards and three scores.  But then there’s everything else he brought with his play, like his 15-yard taunting penalty.

A 15-yard taunting penalty? From a quarterback? First off, every coach preaches that stupid unnecessary penalties are so harmful to a drive and a game and completely unneeded. Secondly, Manziel’s the quarterback. A quarterback is a role model and a leader for the team. A role model can’t be making stupid decisions because then you’ll see them pop off all over the field at other positions.

If Manziel wants to win another Heisman Trophy, it’s time to grow up. You can’t cost your team penalties like that against an Alabama because the Tide will eat you up. It would be a shame to see Manziel waste all of his talent because he let himself get in the way.
