World Cup Limits London From Hosting More NFL Games

RWU HQ – The National Football League is always looking to expand the game of football. It’s never been a rugby-world-cup-2015-logo1secret.

From  alternating locations of the draft to playing games in counties not named the United States of America, the league wants to grow its brand.

Heck, even in the virtual world the NFL is looking to make football a worldwide sport. If you try out the ownership mode in the video game Madden 15, you can move your franchise to places like London or Dublin if you so choose.

A few years back the NFL decided to start playing games in London regularly each season. And as each season passes that number grows and grows – from one in 2012, to two in 2013 to three in 2014. However, in 2015 the NFL has a bit of an obstacle in their way – the Rugby World Cup.

Honestly I couldn’t be happier. If it wasn’t for the World Cup taking up Wembley Stadium, there would be more games played in London this year, but instead there will be three.

“(I’d) be very disappointed if we’re not playing more than three games there in 2016,” NFL executive vice president of international Mark Waller said back in November, via NFL Media’s Albert Breer.

EJ FredFor some reason the NFL is still obsessed with the idea of permanently putting a franchise in London. Aside from the intense urge for profit, there is no reason to put a team overseas.

But with the financial success of this past season’s games over the pond, there are people who feel that it is very likely a NFL franchise will be in London by 2022.

“We had three great games, they sold out, they were executed well,” Waller said. “We feel more strongly about it than we did three months ago.”

I however, am not one of them.

But hey, at least the Buffalo Bills game againts the Jacksonville Jaguars will be streamed worldwide. So that’s a plus.
