Before the National Rugby Football League kicks off next year, the league plans to put together a single team to face Leicester Tigers this summer.
Earlier this week the NRFL announced the 60 names that will make up their 2015 Training Camp Roster. Those 60 athletes will fight for one of the 15 roster spots that will make up the NRFL Rough Riders – the team that will face Leicester in the Independence Cup.
Surprisingly, many of the ruggers on the roster have some type of National Football League playing experience. Some of the more notable names include former Green Bay Packers running back Ahman Green, five-year NFL wide receiver Yamon Figurs, former Indianapolis Colts running back Delone Carter and veteran defensive back Aaron Francisco.
However, one name left off of the list was veteran running back Willis McGahee. For months all we had been hearing was McGahee was going to give rugby a try. Heck, it was even reported that the former NFL running back would attend one of the NRFL’s combines.
This makes it interesting that the former Pro Bowl running back did not make the training camp roster. One would believe he has the raw talent to play the game, and he’s still in his athletic prime. It’s certainly a head scratcher.
Either way, the NRFL has chosen some promising talent for their training camp. I wouldn’t be surprised if Green takes some huge strides in the up and coming months and becomes the Rough Riders’ poster boy. Only time will tell, but things certainly seem to be moving in the right direction.
