RWU HQ – When it seemed like former NRL star Jarryd Hayne might finally get his opportunity to shine in the San Francisco 49ers’ offense, things took a turn for the worst.
Hayne was waived by the 49ers last Saturday and after going unclaimed, the dual-sport athlete signed with San Francisco’s practice squad.
With a number of injuries to the San Francisco backfield, there’s a chance Hayne’s stay on the practice squad won’t last long.
Th 49ers lost running back Reggie Bush for the season on Sunday when the veteran running back slipped on concrete on the sidelines during a game against the St. Louis Rams, and both Carlos Hyde and Mike Davis are out this week due to injury.
With a depleted backfield, the 49ers signed veteran free agent running back Pierre Thomas this week to help fill the void.
If injuries continue to pile up, Hayne could be back on the 49ers’ 53-man roster sooner rather than later.
It’s also worth noting that when asked if the former rugger could be an option in the return game down the line, special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey said Hayne is “definitely an option,” via The Guardian.
