RWU HQ – Amidst the rumors that San Francisco 49ers running back Jarryd Hayne would be welcomed back if and when he wanted to return to the National Rugby League, the dual-sport athlete denied his interest to switch back to rugby Friday afternoon.
“If I was going to go back (to Australia), I wouldn’t have even come (to America),” Hayne said, via 49ers.com. “Media back home is obviously just trying to make stories and use my name to make headlines. It’s foolish.”
Hayne is currently a member of the 49ers’ practice squad after a six-game stint on the 53-man active roster. But with uncertainty in the San Francisco backfield and the former rugger’s ability in the return game, it almost seems like a certainty that Hayne will return to the active roster at some point.
“My special team’s coach (Thomas McGaughey Jr.) told me, ‘If I can come this far in five or six months, imagine how much further I’m going to go in 12 months,’” Hayne said. “That’s definitely my mindset.”
The running back even spent time this week on the defensive side of the ball, giving San Francisco’s offense a look similar to their opponent, Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas.
So it seems that the possibility of Hayne returning to the active roster isn’t a matter of if, but a when.
